ARC forums: enabling informed commissioning
15 April 2014

Satti Saggu, senior associate for research and development, shares his thoughts on the benefits of ARC forums.

Isn’t it great when an idea comes to life?

When I joined WSYB CSU in April 2013 it struck me that, as an organisation, we were exceptionally well placed to make a real difference to clinical commissioning groups (CCGS) by providing even more focused support. As part of the CSU’s research team we took the time to listen to what our customers said and discussed how we could add value to the services we offer and by what means.

As time passed we decided that there should be a forum to encourage more open discussions between customers commissioning our services and academics so that information around high priority issues could be shared.

We held a series of events which came to be known as the Applying Research Evidence in Commissioning Decisions (ARC) forums, where academics, practitioners and CSUs could openly discuss dementia, mental health and patient safety plus many other topics and commissioners could then be presented with data and academic evidence to help inform their future decisions.

At first only small numbers of staff from CCGs were able to attend, but as word spread and we started to receive positive feedback from the sessions, subsequent events became fully-booked. The ARC forums are now established and successful, and we have regular sessions booked over the next 12 months.

My hope is that through the ARC events my colleagues and I in the CSU’s research team have indirectly played a key role in helping patients and service users.

We’ve had some fantastic feedback from the ARC forums we’ve held so far, so if you’re interested in what they can offer you and would like to know more, please get in touch.
